LISTS TO SUPPORT YOUR GENERAL HALO

At Southmead you will have a multitude of opportunities to gain experience for your general HALO, including:

Upper GI and bariatrics

Laparoscopic cholecystectomies, fundoplications and a range of bariatric procedures including sleeve gastrectomies and roux-en-Y bypasses. These usually take place on Level 3 in theatres 17 and 18.

Colorectal

The usual array of smaller anorectal procedures and larger colorectal resections take place in theatre 18 as a rule. The surgeons often use the Da Vinci robot which has some anaesthetic nuances - you will get more exposure to this in urology though.

Gynae

All benign work at NBT and mostly undertaken in the 2 modern, modular theatres linked to Central Delivery Suite ("Cotswold theatres").

A subgroup of gynaecologists is focussing on use of the Da VInci robot to assist laparoscopic hysterectomies for patients with awkward endometriosis deposits. These cases currently take place in Brunel Level 3, usualy theatre 18.

Endocrine and renal transplant

Thyroid and parathyroidectomies take place in theatre 17. These lists may also feature minor general cases such as hernia repairs.

Live donor nephrectomies and transplants also take place in theatre 17, plus associated surgery e.g. fistula formation and PD catheter work.

Urology

Undertaken in theatres 13 to 16.

Minor work comprises endoscopic (bladder tumours, TURP etc), stones (flexible ureteroscopies) and penile cancer. More major cases are divided into pelvic (prostatectomy, cystectomy) and upper tract (nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, adrenalectomy) and there is plenty of use of the Da Vinci robot. There is also a large amount of 'functional' urology comprising a wide range of endoscopic and open surgery.

Orthopaedics

A full spectrum of elective orthopaedic work: foot/ankle, knee and hip arthroplasty, pelvic, spines, shoulder and upper limb. Spines generally occupy theatre 20, with the remainder distributed from 19 to 24.

Plastics, burns and reconstructive

Elective plastics cases take place on Level 3, usually in theatres 11 and 12, and include DIEP free-flap reconstructions for patients post-mastectomy. Plastics trauma and burns take place on Level 2 in theatres 1 and 2.

Breast

Theatre 11 most days of the week. Mainstay of work is wide local excision and mastectomies for cancer.

Vascular

Level 2 lists, usually theatre 8 (open surgery) and vascular hybrid (hybrid open and IR work e.g. EVAR). A wide range of procedures is undertaken - everything from toe amputations through to open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and thoracic EVAR.

Lists suitable for procedural sedation

  • 'Mobile IR' - Wednesday PM and Thursday AM

  • Endoscopy sedation - Wednesday AM weeks 2 and 4

  • Sacral nerve stimulators on the 'functional' urology list

  • Spinal/sedation hip and knee arthroplasty cases

  • 'Awake' hand surgery under brachial plexus block - plastics trauma, orthopaedic lists
