INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE & TRANSFER MEDICINE

Intensive Care modules at NBT are for either Stage 1 or Stage 2 competencies.

ACCS trainees undertake a 6 month block which should complete their Stage 1 HaLO requirement.

Core Anaesthetic trainees undertake a 3 month block. In order to complete their Stage 1 HaLO competencies, a second 3 month block will be required at a later stage. However, it is important to ensure that WBA are all completed appropriately during this time to evidence the competencies you have achieved. The second 3 months block is generally done at another Trust.

Stage 2 trainees either do a 3 months block of ICM, or a 6 week block to complement their neuroanaesthesia Triple C. If a 3-month block is undertaken, then the Stage 2 HaLO should be completed during this time. However, please ensure that you also populate the following competencies that can also be achieved during this attachment:

• Neurocritical care component of Neuroanaesthesia Triple C

• Stage 2 resus and transfer competencies relating to acute neurological injury

• Stage 2 general competencies relating the to management of a head injury, trauma and burns.

Transfer

The School of Anaesthesia has created a link with Retrieve to facilitate the completion of resus and transfer HaLO competencies. These shifts can be requested up to 1 year in advance and can be done from most Trusts within the region. The shifts need to be requested as Study leave on CLW. If authorised, once the shift has been completed, NBT will reimburse your study leave (with an additional half day to accommodate the 12 hour shift). If your request cannot be accommodated on the rota, please don’t worry, you can request further retrieve shifts until mutually acceptable dates are achieved. Please note that Retrieve shifts cannot be undertaken during you neuroanaesthesia 6 week training block, but can be taken at all other times, including on ICU.
