STAGE 1-3 RESIDENTS
Stage 1
Stage 1 residents are either Core (CT1-3), or ACCS residents who have completed the first 2 years (comprising 6 months each in Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine) and are in their CT3 year of anaesthesia.
During their time at NBT, depending on prior experience, they will be doing general duties but may need to do their Initial Assessment of Competence in Obstetric Anaesthesia (EPA 3 & 4) which typically constitutes 6 weeks of daytime CDS work, after which they will go onto the obstetric on-call rota. They may also need to spend time in ICU. They will get rostered for acute and chronic pain sessions, as well as perioperative medicine.
Required competencies are laid out on the RCOA website: https://rcoa.ac.uk/documents/2021-curriculum-learning-syllabus-stage-1/introduction

Stage 2
Stage 2 residents are in years ST3 and ST4. Their priority areas at NBT are neuroanaesthesia (including 6 weeks WTE on ICU to achieve relevant neuro-critical care competencies) and major trauma. They will also need to undertake work to satisfy their other curriculum areas, covering the range of NBT specialties. They usually want to spend some time doing chronic pain and perioperative medicine.

Stage 3
Stage 3 constitutes "senior registrar" duties and this group will typically be on our 3rd on-call rota. They may be undertaking Special Interest Areas (SIAs) e.g. regional anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia, bariatrics. We will increasingly see them undertaking non-clinical SIAs (research; safety and QI; education and training; management and professional regulation). However, the more senior residents may have completed all their SIAs elsewhere and simply require general experience, covering any remaining gaps in their portfolio.
