TEACHING
FRCA teaching days
Arranged by the Deanery - for primary, final and post-FRCA trainees. You will need to apply for these as study leave - they are not granted automatically. Details are in the weekly School newsletter, and in the Events section of the Deanery website. You will also need to book a place on these via the Deanery website.

NBTeach
There are teaching sessions at 11am on Tuesday and Thursday of each week which are hosted in the Horfield Room for those on site (within the anaesthetic department). It is also possible to join remotely via Teams. They are coordinated by the trainee educational lead (TEL) and a sign-up sheet is available on the notice board outside the coffee room. You should be released from your list to attend, provided you are doubled up.
-
Tuesday 11:00-11:45 Consultant / trainee delivered teaching sessions (NBT only)
-
Thursday 11:00-11:45 NBTalk – clinical and non-clinical discussion forum, including College Tutor forums and ‘Coffee and Gas’.

Other education sessions
The timings of these depend on the availability of the educator and support team.
-
Block Club: Teaching in regional anaesthesia (overseen by Ed Gomm (RA lead) and the Regional SIA trainee). This is on Ultrasound-guided Regional Anaesthesia (USGRA) and all are welcome.
-
Tea Trolley teaching: Small group teaching which is often delivered by a mobile team within the theatre complex. It consists of low fidelity updates on anaesthetic equipment, guidelines and skills.

Weekly departmental meetings (EMTS)
-
Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday depending on the month (same day each week for a calendar month on a rolling basis)
-
08:00-08:30 in the Anaesthetic department, or can be accessed remotely via MS Teams - see weekly email for link, or go to https://tinyurl.com/nbtearlymorning
-
An excellent programme of education, but also a valuable platform on which to raise your profile within / contribute to the Department - anything from journal article reviews to accounts of out-of-programme training - we would very much like you to be involved!
-
Team briefs then start from 08:45 - all staff including surgeons are aware of this so don't ever feel that you should have been ready to brief earlier!
-
Trauma and Emergency lists do not have delayed start times. If you happen to be doing this solo then you can’t go to the meeting, but if you are with a consultant then you can go to the meeting and the consultant will start the list
-
They are organised by a team (Ed Miles and Tim Howes currently) and you will be expected to contribute at least once during your time at NBT

Obs Teaching
Currently there is Wednesday early morning teaching that is streamed from UHBW (7.30am start, via MS Teams) and Wednesday lunchtime ‘12@12’ on CDS run by Helen Johnston. In addition, there are weekly CTG teaching sessions (Monday lunchtime, CDS old theatre A), monthly PPH forum, monthly Mat Med MDT meeting and a large MDT simulation that takes place annually.
PROMPT – this is multidisciplinary team training which all staff who regularly work in Maternity must attend on an annual basis. Anaesthetists in training on the duty rota or who are undertaking stage 2/3 training need to attend a training day. Where possible, we will include this in your oncall rota, if you are not booked onto a session via this route then please contact PD bookings (email PDBookings@nbt.nhs.uk) to arrange a date to attend. Due to the local nature of the training, you must attend even if you have recently attended PROMPT at another trust. The course is a full day and typically starts at 8am and will be finished by 5pm.
Clinical Governance
One morning every second month. Expected to attend if working on the rota.

Basic Science teaching
Organised and delivered by Mark Dirnhuber. Mark is an excellent teacher and this session is invaluable to those taking primary and for most trainees. Usually it is on a Tuesday (or Wednesday) from 3pm and he will teach on whatever you wish for as long as anyone is listening! Be proactive in organising it/him.

Novice ACCS teaching
Two hours per week, usually Mondays, eight week course, organised by the TEL.

M&M
Organised by Rhys Rhidian. Please also send any anaesthetic incidents of interest for shared learning, even if they do not warrant reporting on the Datix system. ICM critical incident reporting goes to the ICU governance lead.

Neuroradiology
Weekdays at 8am in the Guy Jordan Seminar Room on ICU. One of the Neuroradiology Consultants goes through the neuro imaging of ICU patients. It lasts about 15 minutes. Anyone free is welcome to attend. Those on neuro modules should try and get to some sessions.

TIVA study day
Organised by Peter Klepsch, repeated 2-3 times a year. An accompanying hand-book available on our intranet page.
Simulation
Curtis Whittle is lead for Simulation. We have two simulation fellows who helps him and runs a lot of sessions. There is plenty of opportunity to join the faculty for various courses that we run or bring your own ideas and set up your own course if appropriate.
