VASCULAR & OTHER REGIONAL

Vascular

Open cases take place in theatre 8, whilst the hybrid theatre undertakes everything from LA/RA angioplasty to complex EVAR. Opportunities include:

  • Foot debridements under ankle or pop sciatic block

  • Leg amputations under spinal/GA with pop sciatic block +/- catheter +/- femoral

  • Carotid endarterectomy - best list is Mahesh Pai who operates almost exclusively on awake patients under cervical plexus blokc

  • IR angioplasty (hybrid theatre) performed awake under popliteal sciatic block

Renal transplant

  • Theatre 17 on Tuesdays weeks 1 & 3 - Nia Griffith uses TAP blocks routinely

  • Renal vascular access (AV fistulas etc)

    • Theatres 17/18 Tuesday & Friday (surgeons are Howes, Khan, Turner, Nath)

    • Anaesthetists: Ruth Greer, Alex Looseley, Anthony Carey - awake AxBPB/Supraclav and Paravertebral - ideal for SIA trainees

Neuro

Peter Klepsch often performs scalp blocks, especially for awake craniotomy

Trauma

  • ​Theatre 3 - usual anaesthetists are Halder, Ballisat, Whittle, Howell, Morgan, Miles, De Zoysa, Harris, Rhidian - lower limb/upper limb and NOF inc femoral, sciatic, LCNT, suprainguinal fascia iliaca, obturator

  • Theatre 4:

    • Orthoplastics Monday and Friday - pop sciatic for ankle flap sometimes

    • Pelvis fixations Wednesday - epidurals

  • Frequent opportunities for ESP and serratus anterior blocks for rib fractures - liaise with daily block anaesthetist
