WELLBEING & REPORTING CONCERNS
Whilst we hope you have a thoroughly positive, productive and happy time with us at NBT, we are aware you may find things difficult at times. Clinical pressures, exams and matters outside work can all impact on your wellbeing and we want to help you through these. Please know that we want you to air such issues with us! Although we are a big department, there are plenty of 'known quantities' with whom you should feel comfortable to have delicate discussions: educational supervisors and College Tutors are a good start, but you may have other preferred 'friendly faces' and do feel free to go to these.

Importantly, the Trust has a truly excellent psychology service available to all staff members. They are very experienced in helping doctors manage psychological, emotional and mental health issues and are keen to be involved when needed. They can be contacted at doctorwellbeingpsychology@nbt.nhs.uk and are happy to take self-referrals. Their intranet site can be accessed here: Staff Psychology Team - LINK (nbt.nhs.uk)

Dr Janet Angus (janet.angus@nbt.nhs.uk) is the current Lead Doctor for Trainee Wellbeing.

Given the nature of the clinical work at NBT it is possible you will experience traumatic events. You can seek formal support following such events using the Staff Trauma Support service: StaffTraumaSupport@nbt.nhs.uk and their intranet site can be accessed here:
NBT Staff Trauma | Support - LINK

PITSTOP training sessions are available to you - these deal with the practicalities of 'hot' debriefing following traumatic clinical cases. Please contact Dr Amy Dodd if you are interested in attending (Amy.Dodd@nbt.nhs.uk).
All members of staff should report any concerns they have at work, including:
-
unsafe patient care
-
unsafe working conditions
-
inadequate induction or training for staff
-
lack of, or poor, response to a reported patient safety incident
-
a bullying culture or any form of harassment

Please report such issues to your line manager (Dr Clinton Lobo, Department Lead) - whilst he is happy to be approached directly you may wish to report via your Educational Supervisor or College Tutor.

Freedom to Speak Up Guardian
Guardians will not be involved in investigations or complaints but are there to help you if you’re having trouble with speaking up, or if you’re struggling to support someone who wants to speak up.

Lead guardian is Hilary Sawyer: Hilary.Sawyer@nbt.nhs.uk.

Occupational Health referrals
You can self-refer to Occupational Health if you encounter problems which may affect your ability to do your job. Alternatively you can ask your Educational Supervisor or College Tutor to refer you.
https://apohs-uhbw.opasg2.com/login/form
The service is administrated by UHBW and you will need to email occupationalhealth@uhbw.nhs.uk to ask them to set up a profile using your NBT email address.

Mentoring
Do ask your Educational Supervisor or College Tutor if you would like a mentor - we will be able to link you with an NBT Consultant.

Alternatively, the North East Mentoring Organisation (NEMO) has strong anaesthesia representation - there are benefits to having someone from elsewhere mentor you and this service is well thought-of and endorsed by the RCOA.
